FAQ
What is tallow and where does it come from?
Tallow is the term used for animal fat that has been cooked down and filtered into a solid fat(think kind of like coconut oil) that is INCREDIBLE for our skin. Our tallow is made from beef fat trimmings we collect from local butcher shops and slow process in house to make sure every batch passes our quality check.
Why do we use tallow instead of plant-based oils in our products?
We use local tallow because your skin recognizes it. Tallow is made up of the same types of fatty acids and lipids that naturally occur in human skin, which means your body doesn't have to work hard to process or absorb it. Instead of sitting on top of your skin like many plant-based oils do, tallow sinks deeply-nourishing, repairing, and balancing your skin barrier from within.
It's rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K, along with conjugated linoleic acid and palmitoleic acid-nutrients that support skin elasticity, moisture retention, and natural healing. Because it's so bioavailable(your skin instantly recognizes it as "familiar"), it's especially helpful for sensitive, dry, or irritated skin-and even gentle enough for babies.
Do your products contain any synthetic fragrances or preservatives?
We never use preservatives, dyes, or harsh additives. Some of our products do contain small amounts of phthalate-free fragrance oils from Bramble Berry-chosen carefully for their high quality, safety, and skin gentleness. These are clean, cosmetic-grade fragrances made to meet strict standards and are always used sparingly. If you have questions about the fragrance oils used, please do not hesitate to reach out to us!
If you would prefer a 100% natural scent, we do offer products that use ONLY essential oil blends. We also offer scent-free options.
Are your products safe for sensitive skin or eczema-prone skin?
That's exactly who we make them for. Tallow is deeply nourishing and closely matches the oils our skin naturally produces, which helps calm irritation and support barrier repair. Many people with eczema, psoriasis, and reactive skin find relief using tallow-based skincare because it's so gently and non-stripping.
Do you use any nut oils?
Most of our products do not contain nut oils, but we always recommend reaching out before ordering if there is an allergy to be considerate of. We're happy to double check ingredients and discuss your options with you!
Are your products cruelty-free?
Yes. Always. Our tallow comes from local butcher shops where we take the "leftover" trimmings that would normally just be tossed. We never test on animals(just family members with dry skin) and carefully choose where we source our ingredients from.
Are your products non-toxic/baby-safe?
Yes! Every ingredients we use is natural, non-toxic, and gentle enough for even the youngest, most sensitive skin. Our diaper balm and discreetly scented lotions were designed specifically with babies in mind-but they're safe and soothing for all ages.
How should I store my tallow products?
Keep them in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and direct heat. Because we don't use synthetic stabilizers, natural variations in texture or firmness are totally normal.
How long do your soaps and lotions last?
Our soaps typically last several weeks to a few months depending on how often you use them(and how well they're allowed to dry between uses). Lotions and balms last about 6-12 months when stored properly.
What's the shelf life of your products?
Since everything is made fresh and preservative-free, the shelf-life is around one year. You'll probably finish it long before then, but if you're stocking up, keep extras in a cool place.
Do your lotions melt or separate in hot weather?
They can soften or melt a bit if they get too warm-especially in transit during the summer. If that happens, just pop the jar in the fridge for 20-30 minutes and stir gently. It won't affect quality or effectiveness at all.
How do I apply the skin butter or diaper cream for best results?
A little goes a long way. Warm a pea-sized amount between your fingertips and massage it gently into clean skin. For diaper changes, apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin to create a protective barrier that locks in moisture and calms irritation.
Can adults use the diaper cream for skin irritation or dry patches?
Absolutely! It's great for any spot that needs extra healing-eczema patches, minor scrapes and burns, rashes. It's basically a multipurpose healing balm for the whole family. However, do not use it in place of proper medical treatment and care.
Is tallow safe to use on the face?
Yes! Because tallow closely matches the natural oils in human skin, it absorbs beautifully without clogging pores. It's especially good for dry or sensitive facial skin that can't tolerate heavy creams.
Can your products be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
Yes-our products are made from simple, natural ingredients that are safe for pregnancy and postpartum use. Many moms use our balms and lotions on themselves and their babies(including us!). As always, if you have specific medical concerns, check with your healthcare provider.
Who makes Liv Kind Co products?
Every product is handmade in small batches by me, Liv. I'm a mom, maker, and lover of simple, honest ingredients. What started in my kitchen as a way to help my family's sensitive skin turned into a business built on care, trust, and the belief that simple is best.
Why did you start Liv Kind Co?
I started Liv Kind Co because I was tired of reading labels I couldn't pronounce on products that claimed to be "clean". I wanted skincare that was truly natural, gentle enough for my baby, and actually worked. So I made it myself-and now I share it so other families can have the same peace of mind.
Do you offer wholesale or bulk orders?
Yes! We love partnering with small shops and boutiques that share our values. Send us a message through the contact page for wholesale pricing and details.
Are your soaps safe for babies?
Yes! Our unscented or lightly-scented soaps are gentle enough for baby skin. As always, avoid direct contact with eyes, and do a patch test first if your little one has extremely sensitive skin.
Do your soaps contain lye?
Technically, yes, because all soap does. But we use a goat-milk based melt and pour soap base to ensure consistent quality and product outcomes.
Is the diaper cream cloth-diaper safe?
Because our diaper cream contains non-nano zinc oxide, it is not recommended to be used with cloth diapers. The zinc oxide will stain the cloth and make it difficult to clean. However, our Unscented skin butter is basically the tush cream without the zinc oxide or BENTONITE clay and that IS safe to use with cloth diapers.
